چکیده

Avian Borna virus (ABV) has been shown to be a causative agent of Proventricular Dilatation Disease in birds. The avian Bornaviradae represent a genetically diverse group of viruses that are widely distributed in captive and wild populations around the world. They are widely distributed in tissues of affected birds and generally produce a non-suppurative ganglioneuritis in the gastro-intestinal tract and central nervous system. Diseased birds may or may not demonstrate ABV ribonucleic acid on ante-mortem tests or test positive on serological assays. Alternatively, clinically normal individuals may test positive on molecular and serological assays. The route of transmission in natural infections has not been thoroughly ascertained. Management of affected birds is beneficial and currently centered at reducing neurological inflammation, managing secondary complications, and providing nutritional support.

Presence of avian bornavirus RNA and anti-avian bornavirus antibodies in apparently healthy macaws.

Recently a novel avian bornavirus has been described that has been suggested to be the possible etiological agent for proventricular dilatation disease or macaw wasting disease. This article describes two macaws that shed avian bornaviral RNA sequences and demonstrated anti-avian bornavirus antibodies as revealed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), enzyme-linked immunos...

Genomic Mining Reveals Deep Evolutionary Relationships between Bornaviruses and Bats

Bats globally harbor viruses in order Mononegavirales, such as lyssaviruses and henipaviruses; however, little is known about their relationships with bornaviruses. Previous studies showed that viral fossils of bornaviral origin are embedded in the genomes of several mammalian species such as primates, indicative of an ancient origin of exogenous bornaviruses. In this study, we mined the availa...

Avian bornavirus associated with fatal disease in psittacine birds.

Thanks to new technologies which enable rapid and unbiased screening for viral nucleic acids in clinical specimens, an impressive number of previously unknown viruses have recently been discovered. Two research groups independently identified a novel negative-strand RNA virus, now designated avian bornavirus (ABV), in parrots with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), a severe lymphoplasmacy...

The pathogenesis of bornaviral diseases in mammals.

Natural bornavirus infections and their resulting diseases are largely restricted to horses and sheep in Central Europe. The disease also occurs naturally in cats, and can be induced experimentally in laboratory rodents and numerous other mammals. Borna disease virus-1 (BoDV-1), the cause of most cases of mammalian Borna disease, is a negative-stranded RNA virus that replicates within the nucle...

The diagnosis of proventricular dilatation disease: use of a Western blot assay to detect antibodies against avian Borna virus.

Avian Borna virus (ABV) has recently been shown to be the causal agent of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) a lethal neurologic disease of captive psittacines and other birds. An immunoblot assay was used to detect the presence of antibodies against avian Borna virus in the serum of affected birds. A lysate from ABV-infected duck embryo fibroblasts served as a source of antigen. The assay...
